New business extension to the Grand Hotel Union from the late 70s

The Grand Hotel Union held its grand opening in 1905. It was the first modern hotel in Ljubljana and at the time the highest building, built in Art Nouveau style. The first extension of the hotel, designed by architect Marjan Amaletti, was built in 1968. The hotel's next extension - the nearby Holiday Inn – today the Grand Hotel Union Business was built in 1979 and so the hotel capacities increased substantially. The hotel got a modern kitchen, a new restaurant, the Union Garden was renovated.

From the Holiday Inn…

A licence agreement to open a Holiday Inn hotel in Ljubljana was signed in Memphis in 1977. Under the aegis of architect Edo Mihevc a new elite 1st category hotel was built in Miklošičeva Street. The Holiday Inn held its opening on September 9th, 1979. The hotel offered 6 suites, 70 single and 57 double rooms. All room were air-conditioned. Room amenities also included a spacious bathroom, telephone, radio and colour TV. The Holiday Inn was the first hotel in Ljubljana to have a swimming pool, solarium, trim cabinet and a spacious hotel garage with 100 parking spaces.

After 22 years the Grand Hotel Union Business withdrew from the Holiday Inn chain and became an independent and autonomous hotel. With the help of European resources the hotel rooms were renovated to meet the needs of our business guests.

Famous guests

In over a century of its existence, the Grand hotel Union was an important co-creator of the political and social life in the capital and in the wider Ljubljana region. In its rich history the hotel witnessed many important events and hosted many famous people – actor and director Orson Welles in 1979, the American president Bill Clinton and his wife in 1999, the spiritual leader of Tibet Dalai Lama in 2002 and the British Queen Elizabeth and her husband in 2008.
